One of the best of Hitchcock (although as far as his films go, Hitch probably has the best track picture of any director living or tiring,) . This film is basically the new “Fugitive” and follows aesthetic closely the location to his “The 39 Steps” from 1935 – a man is incorrect for a CIA agent and is caught in a “deadly game of cat and mouse,” as it were. I Savor the music and the visuals that commence out the film – it makes me wish I had been alive to leer it in a movie theater in the 50’s. And although this film is over 2 hours long, there’s no device you can be bored – the suspense is so intense you’ll be chewing your nails the whole time (I did the first time I saw it) . Cary Grant is beneficial as always, James Mason plays one of the most nefarious of Hitchcock’s villains (I would Adore to have this guy’s convey) and Eva Marie Saint looks pleasing and plays her fraction well. I also enjoyed seeing Martin Landau in an early role as one of James Mason’s henchmen and Jessie Royce Landis (the mother from “To Procure a Thief”) as Grant’s mother (although both were very come the same age at the time) . And I like any film earn by Bernard Herrmann – this guy should have had a mantle covered with awards, but as luck would have it, most of his scores went not only un-awarded but un-nominated (as this one did) . By all means, if you don’t enjoy it, occupy it up today – and by the contrivance, genuine job for FINALLY releasing it on DVD, MGM.
With this film, Alfred Hitchcock status out to top himself and secure encourage on top after the failure of VERTIGO; he did impartial that. NORTH BY NORTHWEST is automatically a classic with the acting by Cary Grant (his fourth and final film with Hitchcock), Eva Maria Saint, James Mason, Leo G. Carroll (another one of Hithcock’s favorites), and young Martin Landau (in his film debut), the incredible position pieces (the UN destroy, the cropduster sequence, and the climax atop Mt. Rushmore), Bernard Hermann’s music collect, and the classic work of the camera by the Master of Suspense. But this DVD’s extras really add to the film. It includes a documentary hosted by Saint (“Destination Hitchcock,” not “The Man in Lincoln’s Nose” as listed on this region), an audio commentary by screenwriter Ernest Lehman, two theatrical trailers (a standard trailer and one featuring Hitchcock), a TV Site, an isolated music audio track and the film itself remastered in Dolby 5.1 Audio and 1.66:1 widescreen anamorphic format. The only quandary is it comes in a snap case like all Warners DVDs, not allowing a booklet with production notes. But this DVD is a must engage, especially if you’re a fan of Hitch. It’s also a price of interest for 007 fans (like myself) . This film brought about peer thrillers and you should compare the cropduster sequence in this film to the helicopter sequence in FROM RUSSIA WITH Care For.

Reform School girls is an over the top woman in prison cult classic that is FUN FUN FUN to peek. I watched this movie 100’s of times growing up in the mid 80’s, and it quiet pleases today. Wendy O Williams is completely mesmerizing to peer, although her acting is dazzling dreadful to say the least. Collected the film manages to entertain with its completely amazing premise. I adore this movie. Pat Ast and Wendy O Williams execute this movie what it is, and why Sybil Danning got the DVD screen I’ll never know (she’s barely in the film) .

Pat and Wendy (both who have since passed) form titanic villains though, and are thoroughly scrumptious to witness over and over again. If you like coarse budget, moving prison films with lots of women, violence & nudity, then you will esteem Reform School Girls. The soundtrack is gorgeous awesome too, and showcases W.O.W’s trusty talent as a musician and performer.

Ok, this movie has no precise set or point to it, but for T & A and some classic Pat Ast moments, this is the movie to contemplate. This movie is one of my Top 10 flicks of all time. It has a kickin’ soundtrack as well as my three current things from the MPAA ratings: Sexuality, graphic language and violence. Basically a edifying girl gone dreadful, thrown into a reform school and her misdaventures there with the bullying gang of female thugs ran by the unhurried Wendy O. Williams. Throw in the mean person in charge (Pat Ast) and Sybil Danning as the warden and you are in for around 90 minute’s of fun.

Italian director Mario Bava exploded onto the apprehension scene with the extraordinary shaded and white film “Dismal Sunday,” also known as “The Shroud of Satan” (a title I purchase because it does such a better job describing the movie) . This portray borrows heavily from a Nikolai Gogol short sage called “The Vij,” and while I am not familiar with the fable, the movie succeeds fantastically at conveying a bleak atmosphere of terror. “The Cloak of Satan” was Bava’s official directorial debut, giving viewers a chance to seek the genius that was to near from this splendid filmmaker. Bava didn’t merely recount films, however. He also worked on all aspects of movie making during his long career. The director even helped his son slash his teeth in the business immediately before his death in 1980. Fans will miss Bava terribly after viewing impartial a few of his films, as he was one of those rare Italian terror directors who could truly dispute the goods.
“Unlit Sunday,” state in Romania, opens at an unspecified date in the seventeenth century. Some of the local nobles choose to fetch together and roast a couple of Satan’s followers, but this barbecue bears a special meaning for the House of Vajda because one of its beget is on the spit. The stunning Princess Asa Vajda fell under the substandard spell of the sunless one, along with her unseemly lover Javutich, and both now face a painful execution. In order to insure that these two sullied creatures wear the price of their crimes, Asa’s occupy brother orders a metal hide of Satan nailed to their faces. Unfortunately for the Vajda family, Asa casts a curse on the family immediately before her execution, promising to near wait on from the tedious and plague her relatives throughout the centuries. After carrying out this sordid task, the people display attempt to burn the corpses, but a rainstorm conveniently whips up and prevents the destruction of the bodies of these two satanic worshippers. In order to rid themselves of the bodies, the House of Vajda orders Asa interred in the family crypt with a few conditions: a glass pane and a horrible must be placed on the sarcophagus in order to support Asa firmly in her coffin. Javutich’s corpse doesn’t fare as well; his body ends up in a grave in the cemetery. All’s well that end’s well after this incident, as Asa and Javutich destroy away the centuries in their tombs.
Flash forward two hundred years. Two doctors traveling to a medical conference stumble upon the decaying Vajda crypt. In a fit of scientific defiance to peasant tradition, one of the doctors named Kruvajan bumbles around Asa’s coffin and causes some afflict to it. From this point on, Bava takes his viewers on a roller coaster slouch of creepy imagery, walking corpses, vampiric transformations, and oppressive atmosphere rarely seen in even the best of apprehension films. As the fear of “The Screen of Satan” unfolds, we meet the various characters who will play discover to the resuscitated curse on the House of Vajda: Doctor Gorobec, the young, gallant companion of Kruvajan destined to do the day; Katia Vajda, the expose princess of Vajda; and her horrified father and brother. Katia’s father knows about the curse of Asa, and he spends a well-known allotment of his time worrying about it. Moreover, several people insist on the improbable resemblance between Asa and Katia Vajda as seen in an used portrait of the Satan worshipping princess. Does this similarity have anything to do with the Asa’s seemingly renewed deathbed curse? Probably, and the fun comes from watching it unfold through Bava’s masterful employ of cinematography, sets, atmosphere, sound effects, and evil special effects.

That Universal apprehension films influenced “The Veil of Satan” is so clear it really doesn’t need mentioning in the editorial review on this spot. Throughout the movie, I continually recognized these similarities. Perhaps the surprising revelation here is that Bava’s film is markedly better than many of the influences he supposedly borrowed from. Check out the coach racy through the forest in complete silence, or the waddle Javutich and the doctor seize through the castle. These are favorable effects accomplished without the support of CGI or admire prosthetics. Additionally, every movement of each character seems choreographed for maximum creepy attain. I kept wondering how Bava managed to bag his actors to fade so SLOWLY while making it search for so natural. Special mention goes to the eerily effective Barbara Steele, the actress who plays both Asa and Katia. I wouldn’t go as far as a few panic fans and say that this woman is descend uninteresting aesthetic, but she is exquisite and the make-up effects ragged on her face give her a ultra creepy appearance when she is playing Asa. I could go on and on about the things I liked in this movie. Everything works masterfully, giving “The Shroud of Satan” a classic feel correct from the initiate.
The DVD version of the film I watched carries a “Special Edition” notice, meaning that you accumulate a Mario Bava biography and filmography, a trailer, a photo and poster gallery, and a commentary by Bava historian Tim Lucas. The package claims this is the uncut version of the film, always a edifying thing when you determine to gape a panic movie. Mario Bava went on to create a slew of films in a wide range of genres, but so far “The Cloak of Satan” has been my most satisfying experience with this director. With Halloween true around the corner, this film would nicely fit the bill for a home dismay movie marathon.
Actually, my rating for this DVD version of “Unlit Sunday” would be 5 stars for the video transfer, 5 stars for Bava’s cinematography (seen here like never before), 2 stars for the audio transfer, and 3 stars for the overall quality of the film itself. Bava was not a colossal director, and didn’t like to be called a “cinematographer,” but this film really is a painting in motion: every scene is a paradigm of Gothicism — the cinematic equivalent of Gustave Dore. Like other
reviewers, I was floored by the print feeble for this disc: it looks, almost literally, like it was shot yesterday, and it’s almost impossible to beget the film is almost 40 years frail. If there are other films from this era that gawk this pristine, I haven’t seen them. My only quarrel with the disc has to do with the dubbing. In all honesty, I feel this film sports one of the worst American dubbing jobs ever performed on a film, and the stout quiz (which neither Tim Lucas nor anyone else seems to have raised) is this: WHERE is the new Italian-language version of “Dusky Sunday,” and why wasn’t an attempt made to give us the new dialogue with OPTIONAL English subtitles? Mr. Lucas would have us maintain that this DVD was the recent version, but obviously the entire cast is speaking Italian (duhhh – why else would you have to dub in English? ) . So, yes, I’m thrilled to have this fine print, but hopefully in the future we’ll gain the unusual Italian dialogue and not have to endure the terrible dubbing…

Many people identify this as the greatest rock documentary ever made. I’m not definite it quite deserves that imprint (my vote would go for the older T.A.M.I. film, which has not yet been made available on DVD), but it is certainly the most consuming and terrifying. Clearly it started off as a documentary of the Stones 1969 tour of the United States (which I possess was their first U.S. tour following the death of Brian Jones and his being replaced by Mick Taylor), but everything changed once Altamount happened. The death of Meredith Hunter at the hands of a member of the Hell’s Angels, who had been employed to possess security at the free concert the Stones gave in San Francisco, takes over the film, changing it from a documentary about the Stones on tour to a cancel that took situation at a Stones concert.

Until about half plot through the documentary, the film is mild primarily a documentary about the Stones. But once the cameras derive to Altamount, the crew (which included as a cameraman young filmmaker George Lucas, though none of Lucas’s film was included in the film due to a camera predicament) catches the increasingly nefarious atmosphere at the concert, with fans ascending the stage, fighting with the Hell’s Angels, fighting with each other. The Grateful Wearisome, scheduled to play, declined to do so when they heard that Marty Balin of the Jefferson Airplane had been beaten up onstage by the Angel’s (we gape a brief shot of Jerry Garcia reacting incredulously to the news of the violence) . By the raze of the film, the viewer is left with a completely sickened feeling of the stupidity of everything he or she has fair seen.
The violence completely obscures the fact that the Stones were at the time precisely what the announcer at the beginning of the film announces: the world’s greatest rock and roll band. The performances, especially the earlier ones in the film, but also in the raw tape of songs like “Brown Sugar,” are stunningly valid, and it is especially apparent the recent ample guitar edge that Mick Taylor has brought to the band (Jones brought an across the board brilliance, and could add everything from meander guitar to moral piano to sitar to the mix, but was probably not quite Taylor’s equal as a guitarist, and Taylor also brought a modern reliability that contrasted with Jones’s increasingly erratic behavior in his last year with the band) . On the other hand, in the film the band largely disappears at time. Apart from Mick Jagger, the Stones are not always a palpable presence in their acquire film.

Historicism could be defined with focusing on the meaning of history rather than the honest telling of the events of history, or recounting the events for the sake of getting to their supposed underlying meaning. Sometimes it even involves projecting onto events meaning they would not otherwise have. Altamount is easily one of the most historicized moments in the history of both the sixties and rock and roll. Altamount is rarely treated as an isolated tragedy, but is more frequently regarded as a turning point in history, as if it were when the sixties came crashing to an waste (something that I feel can more rightfully be ascribed to Kent Dwelling) . I don’t personally understand this need to project some record of apocalyptic closure to the decade. I’ll merely station that I don’t mediate that we should ogle anything more in Altamount than a tragedy that ought otherwise to have been prevented. It should it not be baptized as, nor was it, a defining moment in history.
One frustration I had with the film is that far too often the camera isn’t focused on what was happening. There is a tendency for the film to merely drift at times. For instance, while the Flying Burrito Brothers, there are only a couple of incredibly brief shots of Gram Parsons’s assist. We can hear him singing the song, but we never contemplate him actually singing it. Earlier, when performing the immense Robert Johnson song “Like in Vain” (featuring some of the most powerfully poetic images ever written by an illiterate individual), the camera completely abandons a real-time observation of the performance, and lapses into a approach fantasy-like viewing of Mick Jagger swirling about the stage in tedious motion.
Anyone who loves this film, or merely enjoys it, should definitely read the Stanley Booth book THE Proper ADVENTURES OF THE ROLLING STONES, which covers the staunch same events as the film, but in noteworthy greater detail and with more insight both into the events surrounding Altamount and into the members of the band. It is one of the big classics of rock journalism.
“Gimme Shelter” is a lot of things. It’s one of the greatest rock and roll films ever made. It’s one of the greatest documentaries ever made. It’s one of the best glimpses of a moment in time ever recorded, and it’s a lasting crystallization of the point in time when the ideals and dreams of the 60’s died and the hedonism and self-preservation of the 70’s kicked in.

The Maysles Brothers and Charlotte Zwerin are well-known for making documentaries about bible salesmen, former women in decaying mansions, and artists creating art. “Gimme Shelter” is doubly a shock because these somber and almost grim documentarians have been able to keep across a rock and roll film that gives you a feeling of the power of music and the freshness of the spirit that the Stones brought to the table. In these moments, captured in 1969, you can survey the point where the Stones create the step from rock stars to phenomena, and you glimpse where the wall between artist and audience spawns from.
“Gimme Shelter” follows the Stones from touring and recording to their free concert at Altamont Speedway. The film breaks with documentary tradition and gives us a skewed timeline, interspersing concert footage and recording sessions with newscasts about the aftermath of Altamont, the Stones in the screening room watching footage of Altamont, and scenes of negotiating the final details before Altamont goes down. The Altamont concert itself is a marvel to recognize, to stare what was captured by the gang of camera operators wandering through the crowd (including George Lucas) . From drug dealers to painted hippies, Hells Angels to fathers and sons, from whimsy to horror. “Gimme Shelter” follows the note from it’s chaotic first moments of parking wherever, ingesting whatever and acting however, to scenes of swiftly and random violence springing up around the stage as well as on stage. All of which culminates in the destroy of a man good in front of the stage. All captured on ravishing, grainy 16mm with no tricks and no cheats.
The DVD is packed with broad supplementary materials. A commentary from David Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin, deleted scenes (including a colossal backstage scene of Ike, Tina and Mick hanging out), the rotund excerpts of the KSAN radio broadcast which is broken-down occasionally in the film, trailers, photos and a miniature feature on the restoration of the print.
Buy,Download, Or Stream The Rolling Stones: Gimme Shelter! Click Here
If you’ve seen “Gimme Shelter” before, you’ve noticed that the sound and image lack a lot. Criterion has completely restored the visuals to crystal clarity and given the audio tracks a much-needed shot in the arm. This film has never looked so noble and never sounded so ample.
The Stones have been the focus of several movies and a gang of media coverage, attempting to watch beyond the gamefaces and contemplate the valid Stones. Very few have succeeded. “Gimme Shelter” is filled with moments where the Stones forget to pose, forget to establish up a pretense and answer with loyal shock, staunch exasperate and valid regret. This is the anti-”Woodstock.” Besides all that, you’ll rarely explore the Stones in such top fabricate and sounding and looking so top-notch. If the shots of the band in action don’t bag you, then the shots of the crowd alone are worth the impress of admission.
Rock films are seemingly a dime a dozen, and no one tends to care enough to build them precise FILMS. “Gimme Shelter” is the antidote to the callous rock film tossaway, a film with as powerful brains as attitude, a film with a message as well as a soundtrack, and most of all, a film so considerable greater and so distinguished deeper than the surface could ever lead you to beget.

August 20th, 2010 — Donnie Darko Tagged Donnie Darko, Donnie Darko Streaming, Download Donnie Darko Online, Stream Donnie Darko, Watch Donnie Darko Online
I missed this film in its theatrical release (apparently it received tiny distribution), but since it requires at least two viewings, it’s well-suited for DVD. It’s difficult to record the chronicle or even represent it by genre, which shows how unique the film is. Simply establish, it’s about time go, but it’s about a lot more than that, too.
The acting is consistently outstanding, with a list of renowned names in the cast, along with less familiar ones. Jake Gyllenhaal gives an astonishing performance that is so convincing, you forget that he is acting; he IS Donnie Darko. While the legend is mainly told through his eyes, the other characters are surprisingly sympathetic as well. This is not an easy feat for a script to achieve, especially when the viewer must focus so remarkable attention on every event. It would have been easy to get a one-dimensional hero and a bunch of villains, but writer/director Richard Kelly doesn’t prefer the easy plot out.
Instead, we come by a highly gleaming and enchanting film that engages us as worthy as it baffles us, that injects enough humor to retain us from stress-overload, and most importantly, makes us want to behold it again and again, even after we know what’s going on. In this sense, “Donnie Darko” succeeds where other films have fallen short: for example, I enjoyed the complexities of “Memento”, but I was not able to identify or even care very mighty about any of the characters. The same was correct of “The Usual Suspects”. Both are noble films, but I viewed both from a distance, more analytically than emotionally.

I did not notion “Donnie Darko” from a distance. I was drawn into the world that it creates, and enjoyed it enough to return more than once. A vivid first film from Richard Kelly, who has spot a very high standard for himself.
The DVD does bulky justice to this glorious movie. The video and audio are obedient, and the extra features are quite thorough. I particularly enjoyed the commentary by Richard Kelly and Jake Gyllenhaal, which I listened to the second time I watched the film. They do a broad job of helping the viewer to connect the dots. They also include unprejudiced enough of the usual “late the scenes” banter to sustain the commentary from becoming too academic.
This DVD would definitely be included in any “desert island” list that I would ever compile. Strongly recommended!
Any earn of media that makes you deem has succeeded in what it place out to do.Donnie Darko is a film that succeeds on every conceivable level. The script is recent and entirely unpredictable. There isn’t a single bit of action or dialogue, not one frame that can be anticipated. The characters, too, are refreshingly well-conceived and highly unusual. And it’s a treat to gaze actors we know well (Drew Barrymore, who also produced, and Noah Wyle) stretch well beyond our usual expectations. There is expansive humor in this film as well as broad sorrow. And, ultimately, it’s impossible to say if the entire scenario takes set within the dreams of a radiant but possibly schizophrenic young man or if, as he so desperately wishes, he has, through physics, managed to reverse time.

Jake Gyllenhaal gives a fine performance as Donnie. Even his body language–incurving shoulders, questioning eyes, risky smiles–reveal a great, searching intelligence. Mary McDonnell gives yet another in a roster of thoughtful portrayals–this time as the despairing mother of intellectual and unnerved Donnie, simultaneously loving and hating him for being emotionally beyond her near. And Jena Mallone is objective fabulous, one of the truest, most authentic young actors around today.
This is filmmaking at its best–an adventure for the mind–not to be missed.

This is a terrific, archaic fashioned, madcap, screwball comedy. Deftly directed by Howard Hawkes, the dawdle is frenetic from the get-go and never lets up. Starring Cary Grant, as a straight-laced paleontologist, and Katherine Hepburn, as an impulsive and sparkling heiress, this film is simply about as excellent as comedy gets.
The residence itself is simple. David Huxley (Cary Grant), a renowned paleontologist, is trying to collect a philanthropical grant of money for his museum from a wealthy donor. In his quest for this charitable gift, he runs into Susan (Katherine Hepburn), who, unbeknownst to him, is the niece and prospective heiress to his potential philanthropist’s fortune. Once David meets up with this madcap heiress, his life will never be the same.
The film is eminent for its highly fabulous situations, its rat-a-tat-tat, stacatto delivery of lines, its frenetic pacing, and impeccable comedic timing. Toss in a missing dinosaur bone, a miniature dog with a fondness for such, a domesticated leopard (if there is such a thing), a not so tame leopard, a astronomical cast and script, and voila, one ends up with a astronomical film!

Cary Grant is friendly as David Huxley, the straight-laced, befuddled man of science who is drawn into incredible situations by Susan. Katherine Hepburn is sensational as Susan, the airhead heiress whose hair-brained ideas unbiased lead to misfortune. Of course, Susan falls for David, and the games inaugurate. In addition to Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn, the film has valuable performances by Charles Ruggles, as large game hunter Major Applegate, Barry Fitzgerald as the hapless hired hand, Mr. Gogarty, and Walter Catlett, as Slocum, the criminally wearisome town constable.
It is with satisfactory reason that this film made The Entertainment Weekly list of the 100 best comedies ever made. It is an assessment with which I heartily concur. This is a superlative, vintage film that is well worth having in one’s personal collection. Bravo!
I give bulky credit to a bachelor uncle, Harry Johnson, for the fact that I became a movie buff early in my childhood. Throughout the Grand Depression, as he repeatedly explained, he escaped from all the financial hardships by attending the local movie theaters on the South Side of Chicago. One of his all-time favorites is this one. You can thus imagine how thrilled he was when I gave him a VCR one distant Christmas, accompanied by VHSs of this film and It’s a Improbable Life. At Christmas and on his birthday, I gave him VHS versions of other films (e.g. Going My Diagram, Bells of St. Mary, and The Virginian) . Whenever I returned to visit him, we would head for his accepted restaurant in Oak Park (Otto’s) for a steak dinner, then return to his apartment to sight a movie. More often than not, this was the one he selected. We would determine abet with lavishly buttered popcorn and a wintry beer and again become enchanted by Bringing Up Baby.
Directed by Howard Hawks and co-starring Cary Grant (David Huxley) and Katherine Hepburn (Susan Vance), this is the archetypical screwball comedy. While golfing, Susan falls in esteem with David, a paleontologist. “Baby” is her pet leopard. Any summary of the film’s region cannot open to suggest what a enjoyable experience it is to study her pursuit of him, complicated at one point by incorrect identity (halt with me on this) when Baby is wrong for another leopard which has escaped from the local zoo. Meanwhile, David (discontinue with me now) pursues a missing dinosaur bone which he needs inorder to….

Hepburn and Grant are shining, as are several members of the supporting cast, notably Charlie Ruggles (Major Horace Applegate), Barry Fitzgerald (Mr. Gogarty), and May Robson (Aunt Elizabeth) . So many memorable scenes. Somehow, Hawks and his cast assign and then hold zaniness at a high level of sophistication. Can it really be 65 years since this film first appeared? How considerable that it has lost none of its entertainment value since then. None. Today, how remarkable I wish I could watch it again with Uncle Harry. He died years ago but I level-headed have all those fond memories. He and they live on in films such as this. While seeing it again recently, I returned in time to Oak Park, to Otto’s, and then to sharing it in a shrimp apartment with Uncle Harry.

I have seen and heard them all – from Norman Vincent Peale to Zig Zigler to Wayne Dyer et al – but Andy Andrews is remarkable different. He is far more than a “motivational speaker” – he is every bit a philosopher, a recent day Price Twain. Like Twain, Andy makes the determined startling and what you assume you already know, well, Unique! I am older than Andy and have, through coincidence, eye and self-examination, advance to many of the same “decisions.” But Andy made it all gain sense to me in a grander map. If you listen to Andrews’ presentation, your life *will* be better for it. He is a involving speaker and thinker. Taking a page from his presentation, I wish I could have him on MY Board of Directors! Be Pleased!
I have not seen the corpulent DVD, but saw an abridged version on PBS last week. It was astounding. The seven principals Mr. Andrews presents are not anything you haven’t heard before–but they’re presented in an impactful design so that you digest them differently and perhaps more thoroughly than you may have. His speaking style is droll enough to be titillating and exciting, but serious enough that you never lose the meat of the message. This DVD package promises a lot of extras that weren’t on PBS special–I’m looking forward to it and highly recommend it!

The movie is a small hard to follow at times, and the ending is rushed–and some viewers will inquire of how this resolution was reached based on a few scenes. But unbiased go with it.
Zac Efron proves that he is more than “High School Musical” material. The young actor delivers his lines in a plan that makes you gain that he is both 17 and 37.
Parents notice that this movie is rated PG-13. It contains fighting, sexual references, teenage drinking, and some language.
This was a splendid fun movie to glance. I like this particular type of anecdote, so I knew going in that I’d have some fun with it.
Zac Efron is actually a decent actor, and he was far less orange in this movie than he typically is.
He had gigantic chemistry with his costars, played the displaced middle veteran guy glorious well, handled the fatherly vibe with his son and daughter in a believeable fashion.
My problems with the movie include:
1) Matthew Perry and Zac Efron gawk nothing alike. I’m 26 years out of high school and while I don’t gawk 17, I aloof scrutinize like my younger self.
Maybe David Cassidy should have been chosen for the older role, but then they would have had to go for a grand older ‘older role’ which would have made the wife/kid attraction seriously creepy.
2) The mom hardly EVER interacted with her kids. She had some interaction/fondness for her son, but almost none with her daughter. When the daughter and mother were together in scenes it was if they didn’t know each other. The daughter is dating a very depraved guy who behaves abusively to the son in their believe house and neither parent was aware?
Overall, fun movie to notice. Could have been far better if the writers had bothered to script a better area. Lack of befriend sage on the characters made it hard to really understand the wife’s rage, or the children’s complete dismissal of the father.
